Let's talk about the stars of the show – the fish you'll be chasing on this trip. First up, we've got the mighty redfish. These copper-colored beauties are the bulldogs of the flats, known for their hard-fighting spirit and delicious taste. Look for their signature tail sticking out of the water as they root around for crabs and shrimp. Spring and fall are prime time for reds, but you can catch them year-round in Port A.
Next, we've got speckled trout, or "specks" as the locals call 'em. These silver-spotted gamefish are ambush predators with a soft mouth, so a gentle hookset is key. They love to smash topwater lures, making for some heart-stopping action. Early morning and late afternoon are usually the best times to target trout, which is perfect for our afternoon charters.
Don't forget about the southern flounder – the ninjas of the flats. These flat fish are masters of camouflage, blending in perfectly with the sandy bottom. They're not the hardest fighters, but they make up for it by being some of the tastiest fish in the sea. Fall is the prime time for flounder as they migrate to the Gulf, but you can catch them year-round if you know where to look.
Last but not least, we've got black drum. These cousins of the redfish might not be the prettiest fish in the sea, but boy do they put up a fight. They love to hang around structure and will test your drag with powerful runs. The bigger ones (we call 'em "big uglies") can top 30 pounds or more. Spring is usually the best time for trophy drum, but you can catch them all year in the bays.
Alright, folks – are you ready to experience some of the best inshore fishing Texas has to offer? This 4-hour afternoon trip with Russell and Sons Outdoors is your ticket to rod-bending action and unforgettable memories. Whether you're looking to fill the cooler with tasty fillets or just want to enjoy a relaxing afternoon on the water, we've got you covered. Don't forget to bring a camera to capture your trophy catches, and maybe leave a little room in the freezer for your fresh fish dinner. Book your spot now – the fish are waiting, and the bite is hot!

Black Drum are the big cousins of Redfish, and they can grow to monster sizes – we're talking 90 pounds or more. Most of the ones we catch are in the 5-30 pound range though. You'll find them in brackish waters, hanging around oyster beds and mudflats. These guys love to munch on crabs and shellfish, so they've got some powerful chompers. Spring's the best time to target them, when they school up to spawn. Anglers get a kick out of Black Drum because they put up a great fight and make this weird croaking sound. For eating, stick to the smaller ones under 15 pounds – the big ones can be tough and not as tasty. If you want to land one, try using fresh crab or shrimp on the bottom. Here's a local tip: when you feel a bite, give it a second before setting the hook. Black Drum like to crush their food first, so wait for that second tug.
Redfish, or Red Drum, are one of our most popular game fish here in Port Aransas. They typically run 28 to 33 inches when fully grown, but can get much bigger offshore. You'll find them in super shallow water, sometimes with their backs sticking out! Look for them around oyster reefs, grass flats, and mangroves. They're year-round targets, but fall is especially good when they school up. Anglers love Reds for their strong fights and that distinctive tail spot. They're also great eating fish with a mild, sweet flavor. To catch one, try sight-fishing in the shallows with topwater lures or soft plastics. Here's a local trick: on calm days, look for their tails sticking up as they root for crabs in the mud. Cast beyond them and slowly retrieve your lure past their nose – the strike can be explosive!
Sea Trout, also called Speckled Trout, are a favorite around here. They usually run 14 to 24 inches, weighing 1 to 5 pounds. You'll find them in the grass flats and shallow waters, especially at night. These fish are ambush predators, so they love to hang around structure. Spring and fall are great seasons for trout fishing, but you can catch them year-round. Anglers love targeting them because they're aggressive strikers and put up a good fight on light tackle. Plus, they're delicious – mild and flaky. To catch Sea Trout, try using artificial lures like jerk baits or topwater plugs. Live shrimp work great too. Here's a tip: when fishing the flats, look for potholes in the grass – trout love to ambush bait in these sandy spots. Cast your lure just past the pothole and work it through. The strike can be pretty subtle, so stay alert.
Southern Flounder are masters of camouflage, often hiding in the sandy or muddy bottoms of our bays and estuaries. They typically grow to 15-18 inches, but can reach up to 33 inches. These flatfish are ambush predators, lying in wait for smaller fish and crustaceans to swim by. You'll find them in shallow coastal waters, especially near structure like oyster reefs or pier pilings. Fall is prime time for flounder as they move towards the Gulf to spawn. Anglers love targeting them for their delicate, mild-flavored meat. To catch one, try slow-trolling or drifting with a live mullet or shrimp. My favorite trick is to use a light jig head with a soft plastic, bouncing it slowly along the bottom. When you feel that distinctive thump, give it a second before setting the hook – flounder like to grab their prey sideways before swallowing.
